My New MacBook

My circa-2011 MacBook finally decided to retire. It got replaced by a new MacBook Air with the new Apple M1 chip. I will give a couple of mini-reviews, but the first thing I want to talk about is its extreme thriftiness when it comes to power consumption.

I got it Saturday morning and by around noon it was charged to 100%. I used it for about five hours on Saturday, a couple of hours Sunday, a couple of hours on Monday, and then three hours on Tuesday morning before it was time to finally charge the battery. After nursing along an old laptop that had about two hours of battery life, it was liberating. Probably for the same reason it doesn’t use much power, it also runs very, very cool. No fan – and there’s no part of the case that feels hot even after a couple of hours of use.

It’s also almost as thin as an iPad
